Very tasty:
For $58,000, it’s not exactly a bargain, but this is an attractive car. The 5-cyl engine with 400 HP is just icing on the cake. It’s still a hard sell over the Golf R (or an STi), but it’s exactly the right size and power. But here’s the problem, if anyone was actually considering $58,000 for this:

How is the 400 hp RS3, with rear-biased programming of its Haldex awd system, and giganto 8-piston brakes, a tough sell over its 292 hp, regular Haldex, sliding caliper platform-mates? It also has things like magnetic ride and the sportier seats as standard which are $2950 worth of options on the S3.

Not a hard sell over an STI. I’d never spend $40k on those.
Golf R...well...that depends on your budget.
And I’m not so sure I don’t take the RS3 over a used M3. Not with BMW’s history of HPFP and turbocharger issues, and the fact that the M3 just isn’t that much better than a 335i.
My biggest issue with the RS3 aside from the lack of a third pedal in such a sporting car, is that the look of the front end is a huge disappointment, coming from the original A3 2.5 TFSI concept, and the more recent A3 clubsport quattro concept.

8. Piston. Brakes??? Good god the number one insurance claim on these is going to be rear end impacts.

Of course you don’t like the lack of a third pedal, you are a manual douche elitist.

True, and if I was in the $50k+ market, I’d be taking a serious look at it. I’ve got the STi right now because I find the dramatic race car stuff fun, but the RS3 could be a nice replacement for it when I finally grow up a little. Of course, if BMW offers a RWD 240i Gran Coupe, I’ll buy it in a second.

I like this a lot. It is really expensive (I think buying any audi new is a bad idea anyway) but you get a compact rocketship. Its heavy but not TOO heavy at 3600lbs curb. Its small enough to drive and park mostly anywhere (it has a shorter wheelbase than the M2), and it flys under the radar.
I don’t feel like you should have to get a big car to have big power.

The sound it makes is worth 50k on its own, so at 8k it’s a decent deal.

Or... buy a B7 RS4, save the difference in cost for maintenance, and watch it climb in value over the next ten years.
